Jordan Wheaton, New Edmonton Sr B Warriors General Manager

A General Manager change in any sport is a big deal. Heading into the 2021 season, the Edmonton Sr B Warriors will have Jordan Wheaton taking the reigns as the General Manager of their Club. Wheaton’s off-floor commitments will be added to his on-floor commitments as he plans to continue playing for the Warriors. Not an unprecedented move as Greg Bourret, the now former General Manager, also performed both the GM and player roles.

Wheaton’s first comment to me was that Bourret will continue to help with the off-floor commitments. Wheaton and Bourret have plenty of practice working together as they have been in the Warriors top three scorers each of the past three played seasons.

I am sure a lot has changed for Jordan since I first met him back in 2007 playing for the Sherwood Park Jr B Titans so let’s ask him a few questions:

Q1)Talk us through the dealings that led you to becoming the new Sr B Warriors General Manager and the range of emotions involved in adding the title to your resume.

Greg has done an amazing job leading our team since 2014 when we were still the Spruce Grove Slash. He jumped into the position when we had no one else and has done an amazing job and will continue to be involved with the team as a player and helping with the transition. He is not going anywhere which is great for our team and will continue to be a vital part for us moving forward on and off the floor.

For myself, Greg coming to me and asking if I would take the position was very humbling. I have not been in this position before, but I have a great group with the team that will help the transition moving forward.

I’ve been with the team since 2012 (when we were still the Spruce Grove Slash) and seen the lowest of lows to some great highs in the league. Having been a part of some great teams in Junior B with the Titans, being coached by two great lacrosse minds with the St. Albert Miners in junior A, having the opportunity to play in a Presidents Cup in 2012 and now teaching at Vimy Ridge Academy, I’ve been very blessed with the opportunities I’ve had and the mentors I’ve had the privilege to work with. These experiences I believe will help me transition into the new role with the team.

Q2) In the longest off-season ever, how have you stayed connected with your Sr B Warrior teammates?

2019 was a tough year for us with losing three overtime games, and injuries to significant players very early in the season, we definitely had an uphill battle from game one. This extended break has allowed a lot of guys to recover from those injuries and we are hoping that translates to a successful season for our entire group.

Our team has been connecting regularly since this past summer. A few of us had the opportunity to play in the Rebels 4 on 4, and more of us were playing in the North Strong 4 on 4 before the recent restrictions. We have been meeting regularly on zoom to stay connected and plan for the upcoming season.

Q3) As a player and new General Manager in the midst of a pandemic, what is your outlook if and when the 2021 season begins?

Our current group is very excited for the upcoming year and we are preparing to take steps forward on and off the floor. The newly re-branded Alberta Series Lacrosse is planning on having a season in 2021, and we are planning on a very successful year for our lacrosse club. We believe the new direction the league is taking becoming the ASL is a great breath of fresh air and we cannot wait to get the new season officially started.

As well, we have some exciting things behind the scenes that we believe will not only improve our club, but add to the lacrosse community as a whole for next and future years.

Congratulations Jordan on the promotion. Thank you for taking to chat with me. There’s so much great lacrosse to be played if we all stay safe. Is it spring yet?
